The 37-year-old, who said he didn’t know why he had been attacked, was struck with the brick which was thrown through his living room window.

He was treated in hospital, although his injuries are not thought to be serious.

DUP councillor Carla Lockhart has described the incident as “shocking”.

“I would utterly condemn the type of behaviour here, in a very quiet residential area,” she said.

“It is worrying that there is an increased spate of attacks and certainly we will be liaising with the police.

“At this stage it’s very important to say anyone that has any information come forward to the PSNI is key in trying to bring these people before the courts.”

The incident has been condemned by Sinn Fein MLA John O’Dowd who said it happened in “a quiet residential area”, and anyone with information should contact the police.
