New seat belt legislation has been unveiled which will see a revolution in legal requirements for child seats in cars.
Child seats approved under the new standard must have enhanced safety features, including a new sizing system (i-Size) to ensure that children are using the correct size of car seat.
Implementing EU safety standards, the move becomes operational on 20 April and is expected to be standard across all cars by 2018. It will require child seats to be secured with a simple push and click movement.
Environment Minister, Mark H Durkan welcomed the measures. “They will provide parents with further assurance for the safety of children as they travel as passengers in cars on Northern Ireland roads,” he said.
