An attack in which a policewoman was shot dead near Paris today is being treated as a terrorist act, according to reports.

The officer died and a street sweeper was critically injured after at least one gunman opened fire when she stopped to investigate a traffic accident just south of the French capital.

News of the the killing deepened the tension gripping the country after yesterday’s deadly attack at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

It means police and security agencies are conducting two separate manhunts as they search for two brothers identified as the main suspects in the magazine massacre, while the perpetrator in today’s attack is also on the loose.
