Police have confirmed that a male pedestrain has died following a road traffic collision on the Rostrevor Road in Warrenpoint this morning.
The road had been closed this morning as a result of the accident with diversions in place between Well Road/Springfield Road and Moygannon Road.
South Down SDLP Westminster candidate Margaret Ritchie sent her condolences to man’s family
“I am greatly saddened to hear of the news of a local man who tragically lost his life on the Shore Road in Warrenpoint this afternoon,” she said. “I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased following this heart-breaking incident.
“This tragedy once again highlights the dangers that we face on our roads and it always poignant for people to die as a result of car accidents.”
South Down SDLP MLA Sinéad Bradley also expressed sympathy.
“Having spoken with many locals since the accident occurred I believe it is fair to say the Warrenpoint community is in shock,” she said. “People are coming to terms with the fact that a life has been pulled from us in such a sudden and dramatic way. The beauty of the area along the Shore Road from Warrenpoint to Rostrevor attracts an endless stream of walkers all year around, but particularly during spells of good weather.
“Amidst the pleasant surroundings on a beautiful sunny day none of us anticipate circumstances unfolding in a way that would result in the tragic loss of life.
“I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the family and loved ones of the deceased. May he rest in peace.”
