Police are working to establish a motive for a ‘suspicious’ early morning fire in Portaferry.

The blaze at an unoccupied house in Ashmount Park in the Co Down town was reported at around 3.10am today.

Inspector David McClements said: “The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished the fire which they say was started deliberately.”

He added that police inquiries were at an early stage and officers are appealing for information. They can be contacted by calling the non-emergency number 101.
