A viable pipe bomb was found during a security alert in Strabane on Tuesday morning.

Police and Army Technical Officers attended the scene at Townsend Street, known locally as the Back Row, after the report of a suspicious object shortly after 1am.

Residents were evacuated from their homes during the alert.

Police said the device has been taken away for further examination.

On Monday police said a viable pipe bomb had been left on a golf course in the town.

Strabane SDLP Councillor Patsy Kelly condemned those behind the incident as “reckless”.

“This is an extremely worrying development and, again, it’s the ordinary people of Strabane who are suffering; subjected to further disruption in the early hours of the morning.

“I condemn those who are behind this attack on the community as reckless. They must know they have no place in Strabane or, indeed, in any community.

“It is obvious, however, those intent on causing disruption in the community for a second day in a row have absolutely no regard or respect for the people of Strabane.”

UUP MLA Ross Hussey said the people responsible have no support from the local community.

“The people behind these attacks need to realise they have no support amongst the wider public for their actions,” he said.

“If they want to speak for the people, or make a particular political argument, I would challenge them to seek a mandate in next month’s election. I doubt they will however as they appear more interested in criminality than promoting some constitutional and political agenda, no matter how flawed it may be.”

Sinn Féin MLA Michaela Boyle said the dissident campaign is “futile” and needs to stop.

“Apart from being reckless and putting local residents, including children, in danger these attempts have done nothing to bring Irish freedom closer.

“These people need to take stock from the reaction of the vast majority of the residents of Strabane and stop this futile campaign immediately.

“Apart from disruption, hardship and filling the jails they have achieved absolutely nothing apart from sullying the good name of republicanism.”
