Sinn Fein has hit out at fuel laundering gangs after the discovery of a sizeable quantity of sludge at a motorway layby near the border in Co Louth.

Images from inside the vehicle show stacks of plastic cubes, with a dark fluid leaking from them.

Republicans in border areas have often been believed to be behind the fuel laundering.

Yesterday, party leader Gerry Adams said in a statement that such gangs are “causing serious environmental and health problems, putting at risk legitimate business and jobs”.
