Suspect arrested over robberies in Shankill area

A male suspect has been arrested by police investigating two robbery incidents.

In the first incident, a 79-year-old woman was assaulted and robbed at her home in Belfast on Thursday.

Speaking after visiting victim Betty Young at her home in the Brown Square area of Lower Shankill, Alderman Kingston said: “On behalf of the Greater Shankill community, I wish to express total outrage and disgust at what has happened to Mrs Young.

“The low-life person who carried out this cowardly mugging has put themselves beneath contempt.”

A second incident happened on Monday at around 4.40pm near Shankill Leisure Centre, when a woman in her 80s had her handbag stolen.

Police said on Tuesday morning that a male suspect had been arrested at Musgrave police station in central Belfast.
