The UUP has suggested that a councillor who has been convicted three times for drink-driving could remain within the party fold.
Derek Hussey – who has spoken of his shame and remorse after being sentenced this week for his latest offence – is currently suspended from the party.
He has been given a driving ban, community service and a fine – though a judge in a previous case had warned him that he could face jail if he was caught again.
Councillor Hussey has made clear that he intends to remain in politics, and when pressed for what the party’s position is on the matter, the UUP said yesterday: “Derek Hussey remains suspended while he completes his community service.”
The statement appears to leave open the possibility that he will return after that.
