Van driver injured in Carrickfergus hijacking

A van driver has been treated in hospital following a hijacking incident in Carrickfergus.

He was driving the Mercedes Sprinter in the Belfast Road area around 10.15am on Monday when a man armed with a handgun threatened him and ordered him to drive to the Glencairn Road in north Belfast.

He was assaulted by the hijacker after the contents of his vehicle were transferred to a waiting white Transit van which made off.

The Mercedes was then set alight and totally destroyed.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incidents in Carrickfergus or Belfast, or anyone with any information, to contact detectives in Larne on 101. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
