West Belfast: Firearms and ammunition seized by police


A man has been arrested after police seized firearms, ammunition and suspected pipe bomb components from a house in the Springfield Road area of west Belfast.

The 52-year-old was detained after the raid on the property in Forest Street on Saturday night.

A number of homes in the area were evacuated while army experts examined the items which been removed for forensic examination.

Detective Sergeant Kenneth Leckey said: “Firearms and ammunition were discovered by police at a house in Forest Street.

“As a precaution a number of residents were asked to leave their homes for a short period overnight and Cavendish Street Hall was made available for them.

“The arrested man remains in custody at this time assisting police with their inquiries.”
