Woman suffered face injuries in Creggan assault

A woman has suffered a cut to her nose and been left badly shaken after being assaulted on a laneway in Londonderry.

PSNI Inspector Leslie Craig said: ”The 50 year old was walking in a laneway between Creggan Heights and Ballymagowan at around 8.40pm when she was approached by an unknown male.

“There was a struggle and the woman sustained a cut to her nose.

“Enquiries are at an early stage and a motive has yet to be established. Officers investigating the attack are asking anyone with information to contact them at Strand Road on 101.”

SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey said he was “shocked and deeply disgusted” at what he called a “vicious and brutal attack”.

He added: “The woman was using a local laneway when she was attacked and has sustained cuts to her face and head. This was a terrifying and savage assault that has had a profound impact on the victim and her family.

“This is a laneway often used by local people, and especially children. Those behind the attack are brutal thugs who have no regard for the people they hurt nor for this community.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have any information whatsoever to bring it to the police or to contact me and I will bring it to the police if they would feel more comfortable.

“We need to make sure that these violent and dangerous thugs are brought to justice as soon as possible.”
