Five digital jobs are at risk in the award-winning Culture NI website after the Arts Council cut its funding.

The Londonderry-based website – which operates out of the Nerve Centre – is one of a number of Northern Ireland organisations who receive funding from the Arts Council and have been told the amount of money they get is being cut.

Last week Queen’s University announced it could no longer fund the Belfast Festival at Queen’s.

The Culture NI website, which has been promoting Northern Ireland’s arts and cultural scenes for the past decade, could be forced to close from April.

David Lewis, director of Culture NI, said: “Culture NI is the one place where all strands of Northern Ireland’s arts and culture come together.”

He said that “with the increasing importance of digital marketing, the Arts Council’s decision to cut the website is short-sighted and will simply limit further the public’s access to event information”.

He added that if the website is closed “arts activities will be less visible, less events will be attended, and less arts products purchased”.
