Newry & Armagh DUP MLA William Irwin has written to the Taoiseach Enda Kenny to request a timetable for the transfer of files relating to the Kingsmills massacre.
Ten civilian workmen were murdered at Kingsmills in south Armagh by the IRA as they returned home from work in 1976. A coroner in Belfast has been calling for Dublin to release Garda files on the killers for an inquest for over a year.
Mr Kenny has made repeated promises in recent months that their release was imminent, but none have yet been released.
“To ensure that the families can have full confidence in the most recent comments it would be beneficial if Mr Kenny could provide a timetable for the transfer of these files,” Mr Irwin said.
A spokesman for the Taoiseach replied last night that “particular legal issues arose in the process” but that cooperation between the Dublin government, southern Minister for Justice and Garda mean that the release of the files “has now begun”.
