Dry, mild October, slightly duller than average

Total precipitation was 37.30 mm (1.47 inches), including four trace values, which is approximately 46.5% of the long-term (1838–2010) average October precipitation at Armagh (80.22 mm) and 43.6% of the most recent (1981–2010) 30-year average October precipitation at Armagh (85.63 mm).

Twelve days had no measurable precipitation at all, and of the remaining 15 rain-days, one, namely the 15th with 22.7 mm (0.9 inches), provided more than 60% of the total rainfall for the whole month. This was the driest October at Armagh for nine years, that is, since the much drier October 2007 (with 26.2 mm precipitation).

The mean temperature was nearly 10.7 degrees Celsius (51.2 Fahrenheit), which is roughly 1.2 C warmer than the long-term (1796–2010) average October temperature at Armagh and 0.5 C warmer than the most recent (1981–2010) 30-year average. Coincidentally, the mean October temperature at Armagh this year was very close to the corresponding values for each of the last two years, and Halloween (31st October) was again mild.

The warmest day (highest maximum air temperature) was 17.0 C, which occurred on the 5th, and the coldest day (lowest maximum air temperature) was 10.9 C on the 24th. The warmest night (highest minimum air temperature) was 11.9 C on the 4th, and the coldest night (lowest minimum air temperature) was 1.6 C on the 25th. There were 10 ground frosts, the coldest of which was -3.5 C, which occurred on both the 2nd and the 25th. There were no air frosts.

With a total of 89.8 hours of strong sunshine, October 2016 was slightly duller than the long-term (1881–2010) average October at Armagh, but very nearly average if just the most recent 30-year (1981–2010) average is taken into consideration. The long-term (1881–2010) average number of hours of strong sunshine in October at Armagh is approximately 94.2 hours, and the most recent (1981–2010) 30-year average is around 90.2 hours. This was the dullest October for four years. The sunniest day, with 6.6 hours of strong sunshine, was the 6th.
