The fire began in a bungalow on Winston Drive in Portstewart, a street a couple of roads back from the shoreline in the south of the town, and spread to the neighbouring home.

Firefighters received an emergency call at around 2.30pm.

Two fire engines from Coleraine, and two from Portrush, joined an engine from Portstewart and a command-and-control vehicle to tackle the blaze.

Randy McComb, the area commander, said that there were no reports of any injuries, and that all residents were “accounted for”.

It is not known if anyone was inside at the time, or what the possible cause may have been.

He said the situation was complicated because of an oil tank at one of the homes.

It spread via the roofspaces of the two affected properties, he added.
