Firm trade for cattle and dairy stock at Markethill

An entry of 860 store cattle, weanlings and sucklers at Markethill on Saturday 24th September continued to sell in a very firm trade, particularly in the bullock ring where the 420 lots sold returned the strongest trade in several months.

BULLOCKS

Heavy bullocks sold to £1405 for 640k (220) from a Hilltown farmer. The same seller received £1390 for 660k (211). All good quality forward steers sold steadily from £200 to £220 for 580k at £1275 from a Tynan farmer. Middleweight steers sold to £220 for 478k at £1050 followed by £217 for 432k at £935. All good quality middleweights from £200 to £211 per 100 kilos. Demand for Friesian bullocks was very good particularly forward lots, which sold to £1130 for 748k (151) and up to £165 for 614k at £1015 for a Dungannon farmer. Main demand from £145 to £163 per 100 kilos.

All good quality lots from £185 to £207 per 100 kilos. In all 90 forward heifers (over 500kgs) averaged 555kgs at £1008 each (181). Middleweight hefiers to £227 for 468kat £1060. All top quality lots from £195 to £212 per 100 kilos. Lightweight heifers to £227 for 330k at £750 followed by £219 for 380k at £840. Main demand from £190 to £215 per 100 kilos. Second quality heifers sold from £170 to £180 per 100 kilos.

A large entry of cows and calves (35 outfits) sold to £1480 each with others at £1400, £1310 and £1250.

Dairy stock sold to £1340 at Markethill on Tuesday 27th September paid for a calved heifer from a Kilkeel producer. The same owner received £1210 for a calved heifer. A Markethill farmer sold 2 calved heifers at £1130 and £1080. A Poyntzpass farmer received £1110 for a calved 2nd calver.

CULL COWS

The 190 cull cows sold in a steady trade. Beef-bred cows from £120 to £132 for 716k at £945. Top price £1100 for 864k (127). Fleshed friesians sold readily from £97 to £113 per 100 kilos with a top of £122 for 666k a £810. Second quality friesians from £85 to £94 per 100 kilos with the poorest types slower to sell from £50 to £75 per 100 kilos.
