The UUP has appointed a replacement for one of its councillors on the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

It has chosen Jim Montgomery to replace Adrian Cochrane-Watson on the authority, after Mr Cochrane-Watson was last month appointed as the MLA for South Antrim.

That move occurred because the existing South Antrim MLA Danny Kinahan had been elected to Westminster in May, leaving a vacancy in his former seat.

In a party statement, Mr Montgomery said: “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to serve the people of my home town (of Antrim), and can’t wait to get started.”

He will be one of 12 UUP members of the newly-formed council.
