Police have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward following the death of a young girl who was struck by a vehicle in Bangor on Thursday afternoon.
The incident took place in Irvine Park not far from Bangor Grammar School.
The girl who died is reported to have been five years old.
PSNI sergeant Brian Shankey said, “The collision took place shortly after 5pm and involved a grey coloured Hyundai car. The driver of the car has been spoken to by police and is helping with our enquiries.
“The young girl was taken by ambulance to hospital following the collision, but died from her injuries.”
Sgt Shankey added: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Irvine Park and has any information which may assist us with our enquiries to contact police at Bangor on 101.”
DUP MLA Alex Easton lives close to the scene.
He said: “This is a deeply shocking tragedy that has seen the death of a young girl in Irvine Park, Bangor. This is literally round the corner from where I live, and my thought and prayers go out to the family at this time.”
His party colleague Gordon Dunne MLA said: “This terrible incident is a reminder to us all to be careful on the roads, not least within residential areas. There is a real sense of shock following this tragedy and I would like to express my condolences to the girl’s family and friends.”
