Having waited three decades for the chance to grace a major finals, the Green and White Army are out to recreate the magic of World Cup 86 – complete with a tailor-made anthem.
Work on the as-yet untitled song is at an advanced stage with one group of Northern Ireland fans busy recruiting local sports personalities to sing on the Euro 2016 celebration.
The track has been penned by Hillsborough man Vincent Soye who also composed ‘Come on Northern Ireland’ with his late brother Maurice for Mexico 1986.
This time around, Vincent has teamed up with a group of die-hard supporters from Co Down and a number of recording sessions have already taken place at Gerard Dornan’s studio near Ballynahinch.
“Whenever the team qualified I composed a few notes and wrote down a few words.
“I last wrote a football song for Glenavon back in the 80s for a cup final against Linfield, so this is the third one I’ve done,” Vincent said.
“I am a big Manchester United and Glenavon fan too, and it’s great to see the Northern Ireland fans so happy and getting a bit of reward,” he added.
One of the supporters behind the initiative is Warren Currie. He said the plan is to have a video made to go along with the track – and all money raised through sales and downloads is going to the Tiny Life charity.
“The charity is close to Gerard Doran’s heart so he is doing most of the work on the technical side.
“The whole thing has just snowballed and we’re now trying to push it on a bit quicker. It’s too early to say when it will be available but it will be out in good time before the Euros,” he added.
A number of local sporting figures have been contacted to see if they will be available for a final recording.
Mr Currie added: “There is a lot of work involved pulling it all together, but I’ve been in contact with a number of people from different sports and we’ll see what happens.”
Northern Ireland are the greatest, what a football team,
We’ll sing it out loud for the boys in green.
We’ll cheer them on wherever they play,
We’re the Green and White Army we’re on our way.
Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland.
They said we couldn’t make it, we didn’t have a chance,
Now they’re gonna believe us, we’re on our way to France.
The lads will give it everything,
We’ll follow them and we will sing.
Michael O’Neill and his squad of men have led
Northern Ireland to glory once again,
In Europe they will be the Kings.
When they play in France they will hear us sing...
