A Crowdfunding page to pay for breast cancer treatment for a Bangor mum who had been given a terminal prognosis has been achieved in less than 48 hours.
Two days ago a Crowdfunding page was set up to help raise £22,000 for 40-year-old Melanie Kennedy.
But today that figure has been exceeded - £22,475.
The inspirational Co Down woman has just issued a message of THANKS on her new Facebook page - Melanie Kennedy Cancer Warrior.
Her message posted just after 5pm today says: "Next Tuesday I go up to the Ulster and sign all my paperwork to hopefully start Kadcyla the Tuesday after 23 rd May so I also get another wee bit of a treatment holiday"
The mum-of-two initially agreed to allow friends to fund raise for her after a drug she needs for breast cancer has not made available to her in Northern Ireland.
Explaining her situation, a post on her fundraising page reads: "Melanie Kennedy was diagnosed with incurable breast cancer in 2013. Since then, she has been through several harsh chemotherapy regimes, lost her hair TWICE , had a mastectomy and is currently in the position where the drug she needs to live is not available in Northern Ireland. Melanie's only chance to stay alive to bring up her two sons (16 and 5) is to get 'Kadcyla', a drug that is widely available in the UK, except Northern Ireland.
"Melanie has campaigned to help patients like her to get this drug and last year she took a petition to Stormont to get discussions going about this injustice. However, as we know, Stormont is in crisis and the likelihood of these lifeline drugs becoming available to help Melanie is slim.
Speaking from her north Down home, Ms Kennedy said her main hope is to spend more time with her two sons Josh (16) and five-year-old AJ.
