A permanent memorial will be established in the grounds of the garden adjacent to the Jubilee Community Centre in Monkstown.

It is expected to be installed at the end of October.

Local community groups have been involved in creating a collage of the Holocaust Memorial Flame in the form of a mosaic to mark the 75th anniversary of the World War II Holocaust.

The project was organised through the council’s Good Relations Programme (read here).

The site was chosen by the council to provide the memorial “adequate protection” and is regarded as “a suitable location to reflect” with an established seating and planting area.

A small service will be held at the memorial on Holocaust Memorial Day, on January 27, 2021, under next year’s theme ‘The light in the darkness’.

Speaking on Holocaust Memorial Day in January, the then Mayor, Alderman John Smyth, said: “Antrim and Newtownabbey vows to stand together to promote a united stable society.

“Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is committed to remembering the Holocaust. We must make sure that future generations understand the cause of the Holocaust and reflect upon its immediate and enduring consequences.

“We vow to remember the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides throughout the world both past and present. We remember the lives lost – families devastated and communities destroyed.

“We value the sacrifices of those who have risked their lives to protect or rescue victims.

“As Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, I assure the Jewish community and others who have been persecuted or discriminated against, that you are an intrinsic part of this borough and we stand together with you.”
