I did my best for PSNI over pay rise, says Sugden

Stormont's Minister for Justice Claire Sugden has said that while she values the work of the PSNI, she is not able to give them any more than a 1% pay rise.

The Police Federation had last week voiced anger over the pay plan.

The 1% hike is well below half of what the federation had lobbied for.

In response, independent MLA Ms Sugden said: “PSNI officers do an extremely demanding job on behalf of us all and I value their courage and commitment to keeping our communities safe.

“We are however, living in extremely challenging times with public sector finances under unprecedented constraint.

“I recognise that in accepting the recommendation, by the Police Remuneration Review Body, of a 1% pay increase, I could not give officers what they wanted.

“I have done the best I can for them this year and this increase is in line with what officers in England and Wales are receiving.”
