Imagine if you had a £250k winning scratchcard in your hands – what would you say when you phoned National Lottery headquarters?
Most people would agree it would be hard to think straight and keep your emotions in check.
That was the problem confronting Sharin McCourt from Co Londonderry after she struck gold last August with a Blue & Green scratchcard from her local Mace store.
A recording of Sharin’s life-changing phone call – when her big win was confirmed – has now been released.
The lucky lady was understandably “shaking like a leaf” when the National Lottery operator assured her she did indeed have a winning scratchcard in her possession.
Here is that telephone call in full:
Sharin McCourt: I’ve just bought a scratchcard and er ... and I’ve won £250,000.
National Lottery: Ooh lovely.
SM: I know. I just wanted somebody to confirm it for me.
NL: Mm hmm. Sure. Now um ... Yes, well I’m pleased to say that is a winner – £250,000.
NL: Fantastic. Congratulations with that.
SM: I’m standing here shaking like a leaf.
NL: Did you buy it today as well?
SM: I just bought it there now!
NL: Oh wow.
SM: I just went up the shop to get a few bits for the house ... and I was just er ... and I got two scratchcards. I came in, scratched one and I thought, ‘no, no joy’. Then I scratched that one and I thought, ‘Oh my god’.
SM: So I didn’t believe it so I went back up the shop to see. I’m in total shock. I just can’t believe it. I just ... I just keep looking at the card ... I just ... I’m shaking from head to toe.
NL: You look after that whatever you do.
SM: I will look after it. I’ll sleep with it tonight. It doesn’t happen to people like me.
NL: Yeah, there you go you see. Dreams do come true.
SM: Aye, you’re right.
