In pictures: Republicans defy McGuinness with Thatcher celebrations

Crowds of people gathered in west Belfast to celebrate the death of Margaret Thatcher, despite calls from the deputy First Minster not to.

A cavalcade of cars with tricolours flying from the windows and people carrying posters bearing the faces of Hunger Strikers travelled between Twinbrook estate and Divis Tower in west Belfast.

On Monday night, just hours after the 87-year-old former British Prime Minister’s death crowds gathered in Londonderry to celebrate.

Earlier on Tuesday Martin McGuinness called on people not to celebrate the death of Baroness Thatcher.

Mr McGuinness tweeted: “Resist celebrating the death of Margaret Thatcher. She was not a peacemaker but it is a mistake to allow her death to poison our minds.”

TUV leader Jim Allister said the “ghoulish street parties in Londonderry and Belfast could only be described as depraved”.
