Gerry Kelly has been accused of insensitivity following a remark he made about his visit to the Maze site.

Writing about his visit to the Balmoral Show on the website Twitter, he said: “At Long Kesh/Maze. Sinn Fein Stand at Balmoral Show. Almost home sweet home.

“It was harder to get in than it was to get out last time” – followed by a smiley face.

Mr Kelly was part of a large gang of republican inmates who escaped from the Maze prison in 1983, leaving one guard dead as a result. Another was shot, but survived.

The DUP called his latest remark “insensitive and inflammatory”.

It is not the first time he has come under fire for making light of the event, after launching a book about the escape last year.
