The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland is investigating after what has been described as a “sudden death” on a farm near Downpatrick in Co Down.

It is understood the PSNI were alerted to a man’s death at around 5.30pm yesterday.

Police officers were still maintaining a cordon around the farm at Kilclief, not far from Castle Ward, late last night.

The victim has been named locally as Pat Curran and the incident is thought to have involved a tractor.

A HSENI spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this most difficult time.”

Sinn Fein MLA Chris Hazzard has expressed his condolences to the family and friends or Mr Curran.

“The local community in Lecale have been shocked by the death of Pat Curran in an incident on his farm on Monday,” he said.

“This man was well known in the local area, particularly in the farming community, and his death has brought sadness to all who knew him.

“His death is all the more tragic coming just days before Christmas.

“My thoughts are with his friends and family at this sad time.”
