A man from Londonderry and a woman from the Republic of Ireland have died following a head-on road traffic collision in Co Donegal.

A second man, also from Londonderry is said to be in a critical condition in a Letterkenny hospital.

The collision took place near Newtowncunningham, on the road between Coshquin and Letterkenny, around 2.20pm on Friday.

A Garda spokesman said the dead man was 32, and that the woman who died was in her 30s and originally from Co Cavan but living in Donegal.

Reports suggest the driver of at least one other car had a narrow escape – only narrowly avoiding a further collision by taking swift, evasive action.

The road at the centre of the accident investigation, in the townland of Killyvery around a mile from the village of Newtowncunningham, was expected to be closed overnight while the scene is examined.

Last May a woman was killed not far from yesterday’s accident scene when the car she was driving was in collision with a bus.

On that occasion a number of children in the car survived.

The names of those involved in the fatal crash have not yet been released.

Forensic experts arrived at the scene late on Friday afternoon.

The Irish Times reported that it is believed a black Honda Accord, coming from the direction of Letterkenny, veered across the road striking a black Skoda.
