A 35-year-old man who died after jumping from the second floor of an airport terminal in Bangkok was reportedly from Northern Ireland.

According to police, the man had been detained at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Thursday afternoon after trying to jump off another part of the building.

Thai authorities say after being taken for questioning at the Tourist Police Office, he initially refused to speak, before later admitting he had run out of money and could not afford the £400 plane ticket home.

He was kept in custody but was released every 10 minutes in the company of security officers to go outside and smoke.

At around midnight, it was reported he managed to break free from the airport security and plummeted from a bridge between Gates 3 and 4 of the arrivals hall.

He was taken to hospital where he later died.

Airport officials said they had contacted the UK embassy and have attempted to contact his family
