A former chief executive of Derry City Football Club admitted that some people will be surprised after he accepted an MBE in the New Year’s Honours.

Jim Roddy received the honour in recognition of his services to business and to the community in Londonderry.

“A lot of the work I do sees me asking people to take difficult steps when it comes to cross-community relations. It was a difficult decision to make but I have to practice what I preach so that’s why I am accepting the award,” said Mr Roddy.

“ It wouldn’t be right for me to advise people to take difficult decisions and then do the complete opposite when it’s my turn. I hope people can understand that,”

Mr Roddy is currently employed as chief executive officer of Londonderry’s City Centre Initiative (CCI).
