The camp of golfing superstar Rory McIlroy last night refused to confirm or deny claims that he had got engaged to his beautiful American girlfriend, Erica Stoll, during a romantic trip to Paris.
Leading golf website GolfCentralDaily claimed yesterday that the Holywood, Co Down native – worth some £290m – got down on one knee in the city of romance on Wednesday night to pop the question.
Its journalist reported: “I’m not ordinarily into news but here’s a world exclusive for you. It’s official. Rory McIlroy is engaged to marry his girlfriend Erica Stoll after he got down on one knee and made a romantic proposal last night.”
The announcement on the website added: “Perhaps it was fitting that the venue for the proposal was Paris, after a tough couple of weeks for the city.
“I have no further details as to the wedding date, except to say the news is 100% official from several mutual friends. I’m sure an official statement will follow which tonnes of other sites will have. But remember where you heard it first.
“Congratulations Rory and Erica.”
On Wednesday Rory posted on his Instagram account: “rorymcilroyBonjour! #jesuisparis”.
Back in May, Rory spoke about his “happy love life” following his exit from the Irish Open.
It came a year after his high-profile split from tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
The 26-year-old told the Times things were “going great” with Ms Stoll, who hails from Florida and works for the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA).
The Irish Independent also reported yesterday that a source close to the former world No 1 said that he got down on bended knee during a trip to Paris and popped the question to the 27-year-old blonde.
McIlroy has made no secret of the fact that he’s head over heels about his beautiful girlfriend, whom he has been dating for nearly a year. She has become a regular sight on the sidelines as he plays.
And he was obviously keen to seal the deal after presenting the PGA employee with a sizeable sparkler this week, the paper claimed.
When contacted by the News Letter last night and asked whether the reports of their engagement were true, a spokeswoman for the golfer refused to confirm or deny the claims.
“We never comment on Rory’s personal life,” she said.
Despite feverish speculation across the internet by his loyal fans yesterday, Rory was also remaining tightlipped about the matter.
His Twitter account has been silent since Tuesday while the couple enjoy their time together in Paris.
