A woman has been found dead following a house fire in west Belfast in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The victim was named as 30-year-old Jennifer Dornan.

It is understood that she was alone in the flat in the Hazel View area of Lagmore at the time the fire broke out.

Ms Dornan had three young children under the age of 10, two sons and one daughter, who were staying with their grandmother.

Speaking after she attended the scene on Sunday morning, Sinn MLA Jennifer McCann said: “There is a deep sense of shock in the community this morning on the news that a woman has tragically died in a house fire.

“At present the Fire Service are investigating the blaze and I will be offering any support and help that the family require at this awful time.

“I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the woman who died.”

Photos taken at the scene showed the fire had caused serious damage to the flat.

The roof appeared to have collapsed, a number of windows on the front of the property had been broken and there were signs of extensive smoke damage.

Emergency services attended the blaze after the police received a report of a house fire shortly before 5am.

Police said an investigation into the cause of the fire has now started.
