MP Gavin Robinson raises breaches of bail in Commons questions

East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson has raised concerns about significant breaches of bail conditions by those charged with serious crime.

He was speaking during oral questions to the Home Office in Parliament on Monday.

Speaking afterwards he said it was vital that the judiciary does not undermine good work by the police and security services.

“The chief suspect in the murder of my constituent Adrian Ismay has breached conditions attached to his bail twice, yet still remains at large,” he said.

“Similarly, my colleague Keith Buchanan has raised the case of Damien McLaughlin who has been charged with the murder of David Black yet had bail conditions relaxed to go on a spa break.

“Many people will rightly ask whether individuals charged with such serious crimes in other parts of the United Kingdom would even be granted bail.

“When the police and security services succeed in identifying a suspect and charges are successfully brought it is vital the judiciary play their part as well.”

The judiciary’s independence must be respected but serious concerns should also be aired, he added.
