Police have named the pedestrian killed after a collision with a car on the Donegall Road in Belfast last night.

He was 71-year-old Jim Maxwell from the west Belfast area.

The collision took place just before 7.30pm close to the Park Centre and police would ask any witnesses to contact them in Musgrave on 101.

News of the latest road death – the 73rd victim this year – came just 12 hours after another pedestrian was involved in a fatal collision with a lorry near the M1 motorway roundabout at Moira.

A friend of man killed in Belfast, who did not wish to be named, described the ex barman as “a friend to everyone”.

“He talked to everyone – whatever age they were. He was a very pleasant and well- mannered man who had time for everybody he met.

“Many other friends have already been on to me tonight and they are devastated.

“Everyone knew him, as you would always see him out walking through the Bog Meadows and through Milltown cemetery,” he said.
