The Housing Executive is calling for a threat against its contractor working on The Long Streets demolition in north Belfast to be withdrawn.

The demolition contractor has suspended work at the site, which is being cleared to make way for long awaited new social housing, after receiving threats.

Upper Long Streets Residents Association and New Lodge Safer Streets were to hold a candlelight protest on Wednesday night at Upper Meadow Street and Lepper Street as a result.

Malachy McKinney, Housing Executive area manager for north Belfast, said: “We utterly condemn this type of threat to our contractor. We are very concerned that workers are being targeted in this manner. We cannot make progress on the site when threats are being made against our contractor.

“The Housing Executive takes these matters very seriously and the safety of people who work for us is paramount. We are calling for this threat to be withdrawn immediately.”

The community has been waiting many years for the redevelopment, he added.
