Arrests after shotgun fired in Shankill playground

A man has been arrested in the Shankill Road area in Belfast after a shotgun was fired in a playground.

The PSNI commended locals who detained an armed suspect who discharged the firearm into air in a park in Dover Street on Thursday night.

Police said that a man brandished a weapon and children who were present fled the scene and raised the alarm after it was discharged into the air.

The man and a female companion left the park and were detained by locals shortly afterwards at Beverley Street.

Police said they arrested a man and a woman and that a firearm has been recovered for forensic examination.

DUP councillor Brian Kingston said: “It is not believed that the man in question is from the Shankill.

“Local people stopped him after he fired a shotgun in the air in the playground.”
