Old grenade sparks alert in Belfast

A device which sparked a major security alert in east Belfast is thought to be a World War Two grenade.

The Comber Road in Dundonald was closed at its junction with Millmount Road after the alert, which was announced by police at around 12.20pm on Thursday.

A number of houses were evacuated, and the Army summoned to the scene.

Around an hour-and-a-half later, Inspector John McKenna said in a statement: “The Comber Road, Dundonald has re-opened. Army technical officers have taken the object away for further examination.”

Asked for further details, the police said that it had been found inside a property, but did not give any more information.
