A large gathering of charitable souls plunged themselves into the sea off the Co Down coast as part of an annual fundraising drive.

Clad in summery swimming gear, they took the plunge at Ballyholme Yacht Club, Bangor, in aid of the charity Action Medical Research.

As a large crowd of spectators lining the seaside counted them down, they rushed down a slip and into the frigid water on Boxing Day morning.

The swim raised more than £4,600 last year, and the total garnered as a result of this year’s efforts is expected to be revealed in due course.

One man, Kenneth Sharpe, wrote on Facebook: “Mad daughter Freya on her 4th consecutive Boxing Day Sea Swim!

“Fusses about walking to school but jumping in Ballyholme Bay on 26th December ... no problem!”
