Blocking power sharing with John Hume led to Martin McGuinness later becoming deputy first minister

We saw the way Martin McGuinness was treated after his death as a hero and a peace maker.

If John Hume isn’t given more recognition than him, with his funeral getting the same international attention, I will be annoyed.

John Hume should be given the honour he deserves, and maybe in Stormont a statue to honour his greatest achievement — a leader who encouraged peace.

There is something to be said for the fact we do not recognise those who never picked up arms against their neighbours.

It is a pity that a man of peace, Mr Hume, fell into the shadow of an ex IRA man, Mr McGuinness, given that previously the country had protested that Mr Hume should become deputy first minister, due to the protests against Sunningdale power sharing.

That later moment of power sharing had to come after the country was for years condemned to live with bloodshed.
