Boris is a treacherous weasel hiding behind the smile of a clown

Thon Brexit business is some mess hey.

It appears that having run about like a headless chicken for a long time, made and broken endless promises, Boris Johnson has finally resorted to standard operational procedure of English prime ministers dealing with Northern Ireland.

Betray us. Unless of course we are hard line Irish nationalists.

As I understand it the PM’s latest strategic concession to the Brussels Gauleiters is this. From January there will be an internal border between two integral parts, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, of the same state, the UK.

Tariffs will be applied on goods from either crossing the border in either direction. This border will be controlled not by UK officials but by EU staff.

On the island of Ireland itself, which comprises Northern Ireland and the Republic, two quite separate countries, one of which will be part of the EU and one which will not, there will be no land border, customs checks or tariffs.

Clearly this will inevitably cause lots of paperwork, delays and price rises here for just about everything.

And I wonder will a French trawlerman still catching UK fish in UK waters, thanks to the next inevitable concession by Boris, be able to land his catch in the Republic and get it into Northern Ireland via the open border tariff free while fish caught by a UK skipper fishing in home waters, landed in England and shipped to Northern Ireland, processed or not, vice versa attract tariff attract tariff? Dumb question? Don’t be too sure.

I used to be a bit sorry for Boris when, early in his political career, to try and a bit of public exposure he played the village idiot and allowed himself to be insulted and humiliated by the snide Ian Hislop on Have I got News For You.

At the time I thought he might not be that dumb, just a good sport acting the fool.

I was wrong. Perhaps he is indeed a complete plonker.

More likely a treacherous, cynical weasel hiding behind behind a a clown’s hair do and a silly smile.

Whichever is the real Boris he is no friend of the decent folk of Northern Ireland.
