Hard to see how soldier’s shooting of unarmed Catholic man prevented civil war

I wonder could Johnny Mercer MP explain to me and News Letter readers (‘Former Cabinet Veterans Minister’s funeral tribute to awesome sacrifice of NI veteran Dennis Hutchings,’ November 12, see link below) how a British soldier shooting in the back an unarmed young Catholic man with learning difficulties, JP Cunningham, prevented civil war?

I would have thought such actions contribute to civil war.
