It seems the land border can be turned on and off to suit Irish nationalists and the EU

I’ve no doubt that many of your readers know of Loughareema, a lake near Ballycastle, described online as ‘The Lake that Randomly Vanishes’.

One day it’s there, the next it’s gone.

A bit like the Irish border!

Not so long ago, Leo Varadkar insisted that no checks could take place at the border between the two jurisdictions: Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Yet, today, I noticed in a local newspaper that Gardaí are to be given special powers to turn back cross-border motorists, a move that will inevitably lead to checkpoints on routes from the North into the Republic of Ireland.

That’s after a weekend when the EU threatened to invoke Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol, a move that would also have led to checks at the border.

As a unionist, I can’t help thinking that the border can be turned on and off, like a tap, particularly when it suits Irish nationalists and the EU.
