A Pat Finucane inquiry is inevitable so unionists should back one and try to have some input into the terms

The news that the government won’t hold an inquiry into the Finucane business was expected.

Sadly, nationalists will not accept this decision and will continue to campaign relentlessly to have it reversed.

Eventually they will get what they want — they always do.

Unionists should recognise the inevitable, and respond by insisting that there is an inquiry.

One that is fair to everyone, including the innocent victims of terrorism and which fully investigates claims that Finucane was himself a terrorist.

The alternative for unionists is to wait for the inevitable — an inquiry the outcome of which will be predetermined by the representatives of aggressive nationalism.
