Unionists should welcome reforms to the law on abortion and gay marriage

I wrote to this newspaper back last summer when the initial reforms to the abortion law in Northern Ireland was passed by the British parliament.

In that letter, I stated that unionists should have embraced the reforms, and gay marriage, as people in Northern Ireland now had the same rights as British citizens who live on the mainland of the United Kingdom.

I write again to repeat that message considering some unionists are trying to reverse the reforms presently.

The true essence of unionism in my mind is that all British citizens should be treated equally under the law, that means that women in Ulster should not have be subjected to draconian pieces of legislation because of devolution.

We now have to begin that uniting of British society (regardless of the community you are from) to preserve our United Kingdom for all.
