World war horrors were not that far back in time

On October 7, there was an article, by Corey Kilgannon, in the New York Times, about an amazing barber, Mr Anthony Mancinelli near the great city of New York in the US, who is aged 107 years (in 2007, then aged 96 years, he was recognised by the Guinness World records as the oldest working barber).

He emigrated with his family to the US, from Naples, when he was eight years old; this man is still cutting hair in Fantastic Cuts hair salon. Mr Mancinelli is an inspiration to all of us, young and old alike, not only in the US, but everywhere.

He was aged seven years when the Great War of 1914-1918 ended and 34 years at the end of World War II.

It brings home the fact that these devastating wars are not that far back in time; we should not become complacent — lest such horrors, or even worse, be again visited upon us.

“People come in and they flip out when they find out how old he is,” said the barber shop’s owner, Jane Dinezza. “He never calls in sick,” she said.

Ms Dinezza hired Mr Mancinelli several years ago after another local barber shop cut back his hours.

Her receptionist initially disregarded his application because of his age, but Mr Mancinelli persisted and re-applied; he so impressed Ms Dinezza with his hair cutting ability that she hired him.
