Coronavirus: Newtownabbey leisure centres to close today

Leisure centres and theatres across Antrim and Newtownabbey are to close until further notice due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The move comes after neighbouring local authorities closed leisure centres and amenities earlier this week.

Group leaders of the parties on Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council have been holding daily meetings with Chief Executive, Jacqui Dixon, to address the coronavirus pandemic.

The elected members also agreed to provide funding to the Good Morning projects within the borough as they continue to provide support to vulnerable residents during the covid-19 outbreak.

Detailing the developments in a post on social media this afternoon, Glengormley DUP representative, Ald Phillip Brett, said: “Following today’s meeting of party group leaders, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council have agreed leisure centres and theatres will close this evening until notice, all council public events have been postponed and £5,000 has been awarded to the Good Morning projects to support their work.”
