New regulations introduced for upkeep of memorial wreaths in Ballyclare

A new set of regulations has been introduced by the Ballyclare Royal British Legion branch for the upkeep of wreaths in the town’s War Memorial Park after complaints were made this year.

The move comes after “a few complaints about the state of the War Memorial Park after Remembrance Sunday” were received by the RBL branch.

A branch spokesperson said: “We feel the need to put in place some procedures to try and keep the memorial tidy, presentable and respectful.

“With immediate effect, Ballyclare RBL will be responsible for the placement of wreaths directly following (next day) Remembrance Sunday and subsequent events.

“The framework currently at the front of the memorial will be removed, as this has been the subject of many complaints regarding the presentation and general appearance of the memorial stone.

“Wreaths will be respectfully placed on the grass around the memorial stone and pegged in position to prevent them being blown away.

“Should there be insufficient space to place all wreaths around the stone, the remainder will be placed neatly along the adjacent lawns either side of the stone and pegged in position.

“To assist Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Parks and Services team in keeping the park tidy, it has been agreed that the RBL will remove wreaths after a set period following remembrance events.”

Wreaths laid on Remembrance Sunday will be removed in mid December to allow Christmas tributes to be laid. These tributes will be cleared in March.

Wreaths laid in July will be removed in October to prepare the area for Remembrance Sunday.
