NI teacher living in Australia brings yoga to kids here

When Co Tyrone native Rebecca Quinn (pictured) left home in 2019 to explore a new life in Brisbane with her husband Eoin, her first assumption was that she would continue her 8 year career as a primary school teacher.

However, an introduction to yoga has since taken the Donaghmore woman on a path of mindfulness and positivity which she is now bringing through ‘Be You Children’s Yoga and Wellbeing’ to 5-12 year old children across Northern Ireland in weekly online classes, all the way from her home ‘Down Under’.

“Yoga has changed my life in a very short space of time,” said Rebecca.

“I’ve seen the profound effects yoga has on children after just one class here in Oz, so when I watched the news from home about how the pandemic is affecting children’s lives, many of whom I taught in the classroom, including the stress surrounding the Transfer test I was heartbroken. I felt I had to try and help in some way, even from afar, so I reached out to parents I know to try it out and the results have been so positive.”

Twelve-year-old Kitty Rose Greensword from Dungannon is just one of the local children who is currently benefiting from the weekly online sessions.

“Yoga with Rebecca has really helped me relax more. I’m so busy with school work but it helps me when I feel overwhelmed. Everyone in the class is listened to carefully and we all have a lot of fun!”
