The box of goodies was designed to provide ‘a taste of home’ to Jill Karp – a Lurgan woman living in Minneapolis, a city in turmoil after the killing of George Floyd during police arrest.

In a message to the club Jill said: “It’s so unbelievably special to have this connection to back home during times of unrest and especially when we had to cancel a long awaited visit due to Covid.”

The package was put together by volunteers from Glenavon FC who have been helping people across the community during the pandemic.

Volunteer Eddie Drury said: “It was just a wee taste of home. People are under pressure with everything that’s going on in the world, Minneapolis in particular with what’s happening there on top of Covid.”

He added: “Jill’s mum Elizabeth Reynolds, who lives in Mourneview, brought us some stuff to send out, the likes of the wee teddy bear.

“We added other things like a Glenavon scarf and chocolate bars.

“Tayto was a must. We did have Guinness in as well but we had to take it out because it was adding too much weight.”

Of Glenavon’s relief efforts during the pandemic he said: “We never thought it would get to the scale it did or that it would last as long.

“It’s tailing off a bit now, but we do believe that it will be needed again if people start losing their jobs. We plan to continue this on.”
