Thunderstorms to break brilliant sunshine this afternoon in parts of NI - Met Office issue yellow weather warning - get prepared for power cuts and flooding

The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning for Thunderstorms in Northern Ireland between 1pm and 9pm.

According to the meteorologists: “Thunderstorms expected to form over parts of Northern Ireland this afternoon.

“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

“There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads”.

The Met office add that where flooding or lightning strikes occur, “there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services”.

They Met Office also warm that “spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures”.

Meanwhile the NI Weather & Flood Advisory Service have also today issued the following weather warning:

“A Warning of Heavy Showers & Thunderstorms has been issued for parts of Northern Ireland.

“The warning is valid from 12:00 14/06/2020 to 21:00 14/06/2020.

“With temperatures rising into this afternoon there is a risk of some heavy showers and thunderstorms developing in parts of NI, especially in the west.

“Many areas will escape these and remain dry, sunny and warm, however were showers & thunderstorms hit they will bring some torrential downpours with risk of localised flash flooding, frequent lightning, risk of hail and sudden wind gusts

“Heavy showers/thunderstorms can be localised, and it is difficult to pinpoint exact locations not everywhere will get them, with some places staying dry.

“The public should be aware of possible torrential rain with risk of localised flooding, especially to the road network but possibly to property in areas prone to flooding, along with thunder & lightning and possible interruptions to power supplies.

“The public are advised to take extra care if travelling, especially during heavy downpours/thunderstorms, avoid flooded”.
